West Macdonell Ranges

Gestern (30.03.16) bin ich in die West Macdonell Ranges gefahren, um diverse Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besuchen. Ein Großteil dieser Sehenswürdigkeiten liegt im West Macdonell Ranges National Park. Als erstes besuchte ich Simpsons Gap. Eine Schlucht in der Bergkette mit einem permanenten Wasserloch. Anschließend ging es zum Standley Chasm, der schmalsten Schlucht der West Macdonells. Durch die hochstehende Sonne glühten die Felswände in einem schönen Rot. Danach fuhr ich zu den Ochre Pits. Der dort zu findende Ocker wird von den Aborigines zur Farbherstellung verwendet.
Yesterday (30/03/16) I drove into the West Macdonell Ranges to look at some sights. A big part of these sights is located in the West Macdonell Ranges National Park. At first I visited Simpsons Gap. A gap in the mountains with a permanent waterhole. Afterwards I drove to Standley Chasm, the narrowest gorge in the West Macdonells. Because of the midday sun the rock faces glowed in a beautiful red colour. After that I drove to the Ochre Pits. The ochre that is found there is used by the aboriginals to produce stain.

Am späten Nachmittag fuhr ich nach Glen Helen, wo ich auch die Nacht auf dem dortigen Campingplatz verbrachte. Am Abend ging ich mit Colin, dem Besitzer des Campingplatzes, nach Tieren suchen. Wir fanden zwei Curl Snakes, eine Furina ornata und einige Geckos, u.a. einen Samtgecko, sowie Frösche.
In the late afternoon I drove to Glen Helen where I also spent the night on the local camping ground. In the evening I went herping with Colin, the owner of the camp ground. We found two curl snakes, one Furina ornata and a diversity of geckos, i.e. a velvet gecko, and also frogs.

Nach einer kühlen Nacht ging es heute (31.03.16) als erstes zur Glen Helen Gorge. Anschließend fuhr ich durch den Finke River, den ältesten Fluss der Welt, der sogar etwas Wasser führte. Danach ging es zur Ormiston Gorge, wo ich zum Ghost Gum Lookout und in die Schlucht wanderte und im Wasserloch der Schlucht schwimmen ging.
After a cold night I went to Glen Helen Gorge today (31/03/16). Afterwards I drove through the Finke River, the oldest river in the world, that actually got some water in the river bed. Then I went to Ormiston Gorge, where I walked to the Ghost Gumm Lookout and into the gorge and went Swimming in the waterhole inside the gorge.

Am Nachmittag fuhr ich dann, mit einem kleinen Zwischenstopp an einem Lookout zurück nach Alice Springs, wo ich nochmal etwas im Reptile Centre half und auch dort die Nacht verbringen werde.
In the afternoon I drove back to Alice Springs, with a short stop at a lookout, where I helped a bit at the reptile centre again and where I will spend the night.

Am 22.03.16 führte ich wieder die gewohnten Pflege- und Reinigungsarbeiten im Centre durch. Etwas besonderes war das Saubermachen des Perentie mit Sarah. Am Abend fuhr ich mit Rex zu einem Caravanpark um dort eine Show für eine Schulklasse durchzuführen. Dies hat mir sehr viel Spaß gemacht und ich hoffe, dass wir das Interesse für Reptilien bei den Jugendlichen wecken konnten.
At the 22nd of march 2016 I did the daily cleaning and maintaining. A bit special was the cleaning of the perentie with Sarah. In the evening I drove to a caravanpark with Rex to do a show for a school group. It was a lot of fun and I hope that we were able to gain an interest in reptiles by the teenagers.

Am nächsten Tag (23.03.16) half ich, nachdem ich die Außengehege saubergemacht hatte, Rex bei einer Show für eine Schulklasse im Centre. Danach ging es mit den alltäglichen Arbeiten weiter. Am Nachmittag fütterte ich dann die großen Warane mit Hähnchennacken (Perentie, Spencerswaran, etc.). Anschließend ging es noch ans saubermachen und füttern der Olivpythons. Am Abend stand dann wieder eine Show für eine Schulklasse im Caravanpark mit Rex an.
The next day (23/03/16), after cleaning the outdoor enclosures, I helped Rex with a show for a school group at the centre. Afterwards I continued with the daily work. In the afternoon I fed the big monitor lizards with chicken necks(Perentie, Spencers' Monitor, etc.). After that I cleaned and fed the olive pythons. In the evening there was another show for a school group at the caravan park that I helped Rex with.

Am 24.03.16 standen neben den normalen Pflegearbeiten auch das Füttern der Blauzungenskinke und Agamen mit Obst und Gemüse, sowie die Fütterung der kleinen Warane mit Känguruhack an. Am Abend begleitete ich Rex wieder zum Caravanpark für eine weitere Show für eine Schulklasse.
At the 24th of march 2016 I fed the blue-tongued skinks and agamids with fruit and vegetables and also the small goannas with kangaroo mince, beside the daily work. In the evening I went with Rex to the caravan park again to do another show for a school group.

Am Freitag (25.03.16) machte ich, teilweise mit Grace, die Tiere im Shed und in Q2 sauber. Anschließend fuhr ich mit Rex zu einem Snake Callout, wo wir jedoch nix fangen konnten. Am Abend machte ich mit Rex einen Teil der Giftschlangen (Whip Snakes, Curl Snakes, Mulgas und Western Browns) hinter den Kulissen sauber. Außerdem packten wir die Tiere für einen Dreh am nächsten Tag zusammen.
At friday (25/03/16) I cleaned, partially with Grace, the animals enclosures in the shed and Q2. Afterwards I went with Rex to a callout, but we didn't catch anything. In the evening I cleaned a part of the venomous snakes with Rex (Whip Snakes, Curl Snakes, Mulgas and Western Browns) behind the scenes. We also packed the animals for filming the next day.

Am nächsten Morgen (26.03.16) musste ich dann früh aufstehen, da Rex und ich uns 5:45 mit der Filmcrew am Centre getroffen haben. Anschließend fuhren wir zu verschiedenen Orten außerhalb von Alice Springs, wo wir mit einem Taipan, einer Eastern Brown Snake und Gidgee Skinken gedreht haben. Am frühen Nachmittag ging es dann zurück zum Centre, wo ich mit Rex die restlichen Giftschlangen saubermachte.
The next morning (26/03/16) I had to get up early, because Rex and I met the Filmcrew at 5:45 AM at the Centre. Then we drove to different spots outside of Alice Springs, where we filmed with a taipan, an eastern Brown and gidgee skinks. In the early afternoon we drove back to the centre, where I cleaned the remaining venomous snakes with Rex.

Am Abend ging ich mit Rex und seiner Familie im The Overlanders Steakhouse essen. Das Kängurufilet war sehr lecker! Anschließend holten sich noch alle ein Eis. Es war ein sehr schöner Abend.
In the evening I went with Rex and his Family to The Overlanders Steakhouse. The kangaroo filet was delicious! Afterwards everybody got an ice cream. It was a very nice evening.

Auch der nächste Tag (27.03.16) begann wieder früh. Diesmal trafen wir die Filmcrew um 6:45 am Centre. Anschließend ging es wieder aus Alice Springs raus. Diesmal filmten wir die Dornteufel, den Perentie und eine Bartagame. Auf dem Weg zum zweiten Drehort fanden wir ein leider totes Perentieweibchen.
The next day (27/03/16) also started early. This time we met the crew at 6:45 AM at the centre. Afterwards we drove out of Alice Springs again. This time we filmed thorny devils, the perentie and a bearded dragon. On our way to the second film sadly found a dead female perentie.

Am frühen Nachmittag fuhren wir dann zurück zum Centre, wo ich die täglichen Aufgaben durchführte und Rex bei einer Show half. Am frühen Abend gab es dann noch eine Krokodilfütterung.

Gestern (28.03.16) war dann mein letzter Tag beim Volunteering. An diesem Tag half ich hauptsächlich am Eingang und kassierte. Am Nachmittag fuhr ich mit Rex zu einem Callout, wo wir einen großen Perentie von einem Grundstück trieben. Zurück im Centre gings wieder ans füttern und saubermachen.
Yesterday (28/03/16) was my last day at the Volunteering. This day I helped at the reception and and encashed. In the afternoon I drove with Rex to a callout, where we pushed a big perentie of a private property. Back in the centre I continued cleaning and feeding.

Am Abend unterhielt ich mich noch mit Rex und verbrachte die Nacht wie gewohnt in meinem Camper.

Heute (29.03.16) habe ich mein Auto zum Basic Service gebracht und einige Dinge erledigt. Den Rest des Tages werde ich noch in Alice Springs bleiben. Morgen geht's dann weiter.

Alice Springs Reptile Centre Part 4

Am 17.03.16 fuhr ich mit Rex zu einer Schule, wo wir zwei Educational Shows zum Thema Lebenszyklus bei Reptilien durchgeführt haben. Die Kinder waren vorallem von den Babys sehr angetan. Danach ging es zurück ins Centre, wo es erstmal mit den alltäglichen Aufgaben weiterging. Am Nachmittag fuhr ich dann mit Rex zum Krankenhaus, um den Ärzten und Krankenschwestern einen wissenschaftlich fundierten Vortrag über Reptilien, Schlangenbisse und damit verbundene Probleme zu halten. Der Vortrag war sehr interessant und ich konnte nochmal viel lernen. Danach demonstrierte Rex mit verschiedenen Giftschlangen wie man Bisse vermeidet.
At the 17th of march 2016 I drove to a school with Rex to do two educational shows about the life cycle of reptiles. The Kids especially liked the Babys. After that we headed back to the centre, where I did the daily work. In the afternoon I drove with Rex to the Hospital to do a scientifically based presentation for the doctors and nurses about reptiles, snakebites and the problems you face with these. The presentation was very interesting and I learned something new again. After that Rex demonstrated how to avoid snakebites with different venomous snakes.

Zurück im Centre habe ich dann mit Grace das Froschterrarium fertig eingerichtet. Am Abend half ich Rex noch bei der Präsentation der Reptilien bei einem Osterfest an einem großen Baumarkt.
Back in the centre I finished Setting up the frog enclosure with Grace. In the evening I helped Rex with the presentation of the reptiles at an easter event at a big hardware store.

Am nächsten Tag (18.03.16) standen nur die üblichen Reinigungs- und Pflegearbeiten an.
The next day (18/03/16) only the usual cleaning and maintaining of the animals needed to be done.

Am 19.03.16 stand, neben den normalen Pflegearbeiten, wieder das Saubermachen der Giftschlangen an. Dieses mal ging mir vieles besser von der Hand und es war deutlich einfacher mit den Tieren zu arbeiten.
At th 19th of march 2016, beside the normal cleaning and maintaining, I cleaned the venomous snakes with Rex again. This time I did everything more fluent and it was much easier to work with the animals.

Gestern (20.03.16) wurden die kleinen Waranarten gefüttert und ich durfte eine Show für die Besucher des Centres erneut alleine machen. Es macht echt Spaß Leuten die Reptilien näherzubringen und Vorurteile abzubauen. Natürlich standen auch wieder die alltäglichen Arbeiten an.
Yesterday (20/03/16) the small monitor lizard species got fed and I was allowed to do a show for the visitors of the centre alone again. It is a lot of fun to show the reptiles to the people and educate them about these animals. Of course I also had to do the daily cleaining.

Heute (21.03.16) machte ich im Laufe des Tages mehrere Shows und Führungen mit Rex, unter anderem für zwei Schulklassen und zwei Reisegruppen.

Gestern (15.03.16) bin ich nach dem Volunteering, wo ich wieder die üblichen Arbeiten durchgeführt habe (Becken reinigen, Tiere füttern, etc.), mit Rex in die West Macdonell Ranges gefahren, um nach Tieren zu suchen. Die Nacht war auch sehr erfolgreich!
Hier die Liste der Arten, die wir gefunden haben:

Am häufigsten waren jedoch die Stabheuschrecken ;). Leider konnte ich von der Western Brown und der Mulga keine Fotos machen, weil diese zu schnell weg waren.
Yesterday (15/03/16), after the volunteering, where I did the daily work (cleaning, feeding), I went herping in the West Macdonell Ranges with Rex. The night was very successful!

Heute (16.03.16) gab es beim Volunteering wieder die üblichen Aufgaben zu erledigen. Am Vortag wurde bei einem Snake Callout eine wunderschöne Narrow-banded Shovel-nosed Snake (Brachyurophis fasciolatus gefangen. Ansonsten war es ruhig.
Today (16/03/16) I did the common daily work at the volunteering. The day before a beautiful narrow-banded shovel-nosed snake (Brachyurophis fasciolatus) was caught during a snake callout. Apart from that it was quiet.
